I want my dog to go in and out without him bugging me day and night. He is getting senile in his old age and wants in and out constantly. I live in a good neighborhood but still who wants to expose oneself to that kind of security hole. I need advice with anyone with experience please.

The new dog doors are a special electronic lock that senses your dog`s electronic key (built into his collar). Do NOT get the kind that is infrared only as they will let in other dogs or worse a thief. You must get the kind that has the electronic key that you attach to your dog`s leash. Obviously, you want to get one that doesn`t have an obvious looking key if your dog is the trusting and friendly type with respect to strangers. You may want to disguise it somehow.

This answer closely relates to:

    • Which electronic dog doors are best suited for the winter in cold climates?
    • Do electronic dog fences really work?
    • How to get my dog to stop barking with a collar?
  • Safest electronic dog door

"And if he is wearing his special electronic key collar..."

I think it would be neat if they invented a voice recognition ( or should I say a bark recognition) activated door. For security the door would only open with the dogs bark and if he is wearing his special electronic key collar . Of course this means training your dog to bark to get in which is counter productive for most dog owners... but still its a neat idea.
