Denise | Q. What is the difference between a good compass and a cheap compass?
"On my cheap compass..."
On my cheap compass, the needle sticks. You have to tap it to be sure you are heading the right way. I believe a good compass is more reliable, and it built better to withstand all the knocks and bumps sure to happen while camping. Ted 13 Miller St., Toronto, Ontario

Construction materials. The magnet size, glass vs plastic casing... etc. Pay the extra bucks. Its well worth it. Jamie Trandell, Magneto Enterprises, 7 King St., Georgetown, Ontario

 Q. My compass is pointing in the wrong direction - why ? i bought a compass from a local supermarket, did'nt pay attenttion but recently figured it out after putting it in my car that it is pointing not in the correct direction, there are no megnetic substances where it is placed now - but what would have cause this to happen...........??
"My old car had a built-in compass and you had to set the..."
Many compasses have zone settings for different parts of the country. My old car had a built-in compass and you had to set the zone for it to work correctly.
Absent that is there a calibration screw that you could adjust ?
Just so you know, your car being made out of lots of magnetically susceptible material (ie. steel) has a huge secondary magnetic field. The compass will need to be adjusted to compensate for the cars magnetic response.

 Q. How do you determine the correction for a magnetic compass? i bought a watch that has an electronic compass and in the manual it says:
declination adjusts the compass for the local magnetic fields. in some areas,
magnetic declination can be considerable. declination is sometimes measured as
degrees negative and positive. degrees east are considered positive and degrees
west are considered negative.
"The real north pole (especially with a compass in a watch..."
The magnetic pole is offset on the earth surface, its not at the top of the globe as people like to think. So that means our compasses need to be adjusted to our location if we want them to work correctly. This website will tell you what declination is right for your area. If you are in the central US or Canada, it doesn't matter that much because the magnetic pole is actually inline with the real north pole (especially with a compass in a watch , it probably isn't all that accurate to begin with.)
If you are east of Kansas (I think), it will be in degrees west (negative), if you are west of Kansas, it will be in degrees east (positive)

 Q. What do you call a house where each corned is aligned to a point of the compass? i'm buying a house and it's certainly got charactor. one feature is that each corner is aligned to a point of the compass (nesw) but the agent and owner aren't sure what the name is for a house like this, although they agree there is one. i'm no architect but it looks similar to a local methodist church in construction so that might be something to do with it and someone has said it's called a manx house but i can't find any reference to this type of building.
Cardinally aligned (like the Egyptians with their pyramids)!

 Q. I just can't decide which car to buy! suggestions! please help!? i'm deciding between three american chrysler cars. it must be an american company because i have many relatives that work for american car companies, we have/had many car factories, dealerships or factories that make other things for cars in the area that i live. i prefer chysler because i can get a "green sheet" discount from them that will save me about 1500-3000 dollars.
i can not decide between three vechiles that are in my price range, all 2008, dodge caliber se, pt cruiser street cruiser series or jeep compass. i like them all about the same driving.
caliber - pros and cons
i've liked the caliber ever since they first came out and have been thinking of buying one for awhile now. i can really picture myself in this car. however, with the high gas prices, people in my area are selling thier suv like crazy and buying the cheaper version of a caliber up like crazy. it is nearly impossible to buy one at my local dealership at the price i want because they can't keep them in st
ock. the only models of the caliber that they can keep in stock are the ones that cost 3,000-10,000 dollars more and to be honest, i don’t want to pay that much more for something that this actually the same but has more spoilers and fancier chrome on the outside. i love the look of chrome, but i just can’t afford to buy a more expensive caliber just for the extra “bling”. i will have to drive to a dealer an hour away to get the caliber that i want in the price range that i want with the features and the colors i want. one thing i like about the caliber is that it has lots of awesome special features standard like illuminated cupholders, chill zone beverage storage, and an mp3 player jack. plus it comes with a free year of sirius salletite radio with all the equipment already included. it gets slightly better mpg than the other vechiles but its not much more and i drive fairly close to home, work and grad school so its not a big deal for me.
my fiancee usually drives when we go out and especially on longer trips in his car with really good mpg anyway. it’s not as fancy on the outside as the other vechiles but i love the body style. one thing i don’t like about it is that it is the hardest one to see out of when backing up, and i suck at backing up. another good favor is this vechiles body is made in il and is 66% made out of american parts, although it has a mexican made engine. i hae nothing against mexicans but i want to support american jobs. it will cost me 211 a month with a 1,200 rebate, a green sheet, getting 500 dollars for my very old car, and a 600 down payment.
pt cruiser- this one is the least expensive of the three vechiles. it will cost me 211 a month with a 2,000 rebate, a green sheet, getting 500 dollars for my very old car, and no down payment. it’s mpg is the worst of the three cars, but it’s a slight difference. it’s very fancy and is the prettiest on the outside. i like it’s unique look.
it’s very fancy and is the prettiest on the outside. i like it’s unique look. it has extremelty bright red paint which appeals to me and lots of chrome. this car has the bling! on the inside, it has chrome too and red accents on the seat. it doesn’t have as nice of a stero, no mp3 jack or free sateelitte radio but it has more storage and is more roomier. this is the easiest car to back up in. it has the biggest engine and drives up the large hill i have to go up every morning the best. it doesn’t have goodies like chill zone. this car looks like it is very expensive. but its not selling as well because of its slightly lower mpg so people are not buying them as much as they used too. pt cruisers used to cost more. it also a sun roof. my fiancee likes this car the best but i'll be paying for it the next year untill we get married so he says its my choice. it's only 33% american made and was made in mexico with a mexican engine. not sure where they get 33% from.
jeep compass - this is the most expensive of the three cars but is in the middle with mpg. i like it’s compact size and it still has the cool jeep look. my fiancee doesn’t like this vechile at all. he hates it. it’s okay for backing up but not as easy as the pt cruiser but better than the caliber. i like that it is made in america and has the highest american made percentage but it does have a mexican engine too. my parents are trying to convince me to get this one because they like it the best and all drive jeeps. this is a very popular car where i live and it comes with free satelite radio. it has a 2,0 l engine like the caliber. the cruiser has 2.4 l. the dealer says it has the most expensive tires when they need to be replaced. i liked the way this was extremely smooth and i think it sat up a little higher than the rest. this one will costs me 247 a month with a 740 rebate, a 500 trade in for my very old car, a green sheet and a 850 down payment.
i just don't know which to buy!
I had a P/T crusier once upon a time... I loved the look of it but the performance and the repairs really suck.... as i have said a few times now is that it uses the same frame and drivetrain as the neon and therefore things really wear out fast on it, like the breaks,,,, so I tell everyone that all a P/T Crusier is .... it's a preagnet neon or a neon on steriods!!!
But the choice is yours to make, If you can afford a NEW car and insurance and keep a rof over your head,,, then good for you!!!

 Q. Does anyone understand the logic behind vilifying athletes for taking money in college? the ncaa needs to be investigated by congress. coaches, universities, the ncaa, television and radio stations are making millions to billions off of these athletes, many of whom came from poor backgrounds. yet if one takes a car, even gets a meal paid for by someone else, they get investigated? what is this, slavery?
do most of the comfortable middle to upper-middle class fans know the socioeconomic background most of these players come from? they don't have their wealthy parents to cut them checks in school to support them. a lot really don't care, and aren't there for a college education, they are there to play sports. if their performance suffers, they are cut and lose their scholarship. so it can be argued that sports comes first at these places. i have graduated from a division 1 school with a top football program and can confirm this.
i used to condemn athletes for taking money and cars until i started living in the real world and dealt with scumbag bosses and their lame excuses for ripping you off, while they buy big houses and vacation all the time. these players are getting the shaft, and most ncaa fans are too dim to see this. if this is so amateur, how can the coach get millions a year, in addition to endorsement deals? he should be making as much as a professor and teaching on campus!
bush had the opportunity to speak out against this garbage, but instead he decided he was going to "help" usc. he's either dumb or brainwashed.
i sense there is a bit of racial divide when it comes to this issue too. notice it's bad for the black players to have taken money and bought luxury items, but no one talks about the white coaches, the university presidents, and tv and radio broadcasters who fly in private planes or first class and live in nice homes!
i'm sorry, i know it's against the "rules", but my moral compass tells me that the ncaa is wrong for not paying athletes, and not even allowing them to take outside sources of revenue.
university is not the place for a minor league system. the rules in place basically protect an institution of slavery. notice that very few, if any sports news outlets or news op-ed columns ever criticize the ncaa. they are in on it with them.
does the nfl or nba not realize how much money the ncaa is costing them? their teams could be as popular as teams in europe because fans could devote most of their time and funds to the local team!
i just fail to see, how the athletes are to blame for everything with these scandals.
i have no ideas

 Q. What do canadians think of this american story? there was a highly adventurous guy from the states who wanted to walk to the northernmost part of canada (which we all know is alert, ellemere island, nunavut). instead? he ended up in detroit, michigan, usa. read below:
this american guy entered canada by walking over the vermont border (with a passport of course) into quebec until he reached montreal. he wanted to know how to get more up north by walking.
so he asked one of the locals in montreal if he was in the upper (north part of canada) or lower (southern part of canada). the montreal guy responded "the part of canada you are in was historically known as "lower canada."
he said "well i want to go up north to upper canada."
the montreal guy said "how far into upper canada do you wanna go?"
the guy said, "deeeep into upper canada"
the montreal guy took him for a ride and said we will be going to "upper canada", we will be going through a place called ontario and you will see "upper canada college" and "upper canada shops", it's anglophone.
he said, "i wanna go allll the way to the deepest part of upper canada, wayyyyy uppper upper upper....
so the montreal guy drove the american to the edge of ontario and dropped him off in windsor.
the american guy said "is this as far up canada as you can go???
the montreal guy said "i believe so."
then the american guy decided he could buy a compass to go that last stretch of north to reach the arctic ocean since he was soooo far up into upper canada.
he instead ran into a huge river and a huge bridge over it called ambassador bridge, and when he crossed it, he was in detroit! how ironic.
what do canadians think of this story? the moral of the story is "do not underestimate the value of the saint lawrence river
I'm kinda mad at you after reading all of that... Everybody knows the Canada/America border is all zig zag like that.

 Q. Oxygen sensor parts department question? my oxygen sensor is bad on my 2007 jeep compass. it was cut don't ask me how. i've been reading up on replacing it and i feel i could do it on my own. is it better to buy the sensor at the dealership or go to a local parts store? would the dealership even sell it? would they have the oem and not the universal one? my jeep is a lease so i'm imagining i should get it at the dealership so they don't and rip me off when i return it. are all sensors the same or do i have to tell them specifically it's the one on the exhaust manifold? are all oxygen sensor locations the same. thanks
My recommendation is to always use oem parts when it comes to engine control components. yes, the dealer will sell you a sensor. The dealer will not sell you an aftermarket universal. They will only have the oem replacement. You should specify which sensor it is. they usually have a specific part number for each sensor due to the location, i.e. harness length, connector. It's not hard to replace assuming it's easy to access. You will more than likely need an Oxygen sensor socket. they sell them at most auto parts stores.

 Q. Parents - should schools tell you which movies to watch with your kids? "attention parents: the golden compass is a movie that is coming to "any city" on dec. 7th. we would like to give all of you a friendly warning about this movie. it is based on a book written by phillip pullman, a proud atheist who hates cs lewis's chronicals of narnial. he wrote three books to show the other side. the movie has been dumbed down to fool kids and their parents in the hope that they will buy his trilogy where at the end of the third book the children kill god and everyone can do as they please. if you would like to know more about this movie, you can go to snopes. com. "
this was a note sent home at a local school.
so, what do you think?
it is a public school.
"Contact local media and a lawyer..."
If it's a public school they should be taken to court for promoting religion and violating the separation of church and state. If it were a Catholic school it would be one thing... but a public school is LEGALLY not allowed to condone or promote religion, which is exactly what this note is doing.
Contact local media and a lawyer.
God doesn't belong in the schools and the schools should not be advising parents on what movies to see with their children.
