Q. What is the difference between a good compass and a cheap compass?

On my cheap compass, the needle sticks. You have to tap it to be sure you are heading the right way. I believe a good compass is more reliable, and it built better to withstand all the knocks and bumps sure to happen while camping. Ted 13 Miller St., Toronto, Ontario

Construction materials. The magnet size, glass vs plastic casing... etc. Pay the extra bucks. Its well worth it. Jamie Trandell, Magneto Enterprises, 7 King St., Georgetown, Ontario

Q. What is the difference between a good compass and a cheap compass?

Functionally not too much except for a good compass will have a casing that allows you to line up the compass with the map for orienteering. It depends on your intent whether or not you need to spend to buy the more expensive compass.

Q. What's up with american cars? the dodge caliber and jeep compass are cheaper. is this a good practical deal?
i've been shopping for a new car for the past 2 months and hoping to buy before autumn. i have really no preference, just fairly priced and practical car. if theses american cars are cheaper, are they really priced fair or just inferior? i have no case against resale and depreciation values cause i would love my car up to the last mile it runs.

i have a 99 wrangler that i drove the spit out of!! it has 472,000 miles on it. i bought it with 163,000 back in 2006. i have replaced the radiator, tstat, and oil pan gasket. when i cross 500k, i will take a picture and post it here and on my myspace, so that one and all can marvel at AMERICAN car quality.

Q. Im looking to buy a 2005 honda element, jeep compass, or a dodge nitro?
is there anyone out there who owns any of these cars around that year? what do you think of it? is it a good reliable cheap to own car? have you had any major issues? what have your repair bills been like? would you recommend it?

You also should compare car insurance quotes for cars before buying one, for example here - carinsurance.yoll.net

Q. Buying a jeep product? but chrysler is going down?
i am interested in a jeep patriot maybe the compass...i would rather have a v6 (liberty) but i want something cheaper and better mpg. soo..should i still buy a jeep product even if it says lifetime powertrain warrenty wouldn't that go down the crapper when chrysler is going down? anybody have any thoughts on this?

Chrysler is going into bankruptcy reorganization. They are not going out of business. When they get done Fiat will be a major owner of Chrysler. All warranty's will be backed by federal government so they will remain intact. If the company defaults but there not. Gmac finance is taking control of the finance portion of Chrysler so they can finance cars ..This was on the news ths morning..........If you want a Jeep buy it................md

Q. Which jeep is the best buy?
this is for a leased jeep. my husband and i will be sharing this vehicle. we do mostly city/suburban driving. we do take a long distance vacation about once or twice during the duration of the lease. we currently have a 2004 buick regal with leather interior. it only has about 41,000km (25,477 miles) on it. we'd like to stick with leather seats because we have two dogs...no children...and leather is easier to clean. we aren't really interested in the jeep wrangler because of the size and insurance costs. we've test driven the 2008 compass, 2008 patriot, 2008 liberty, and 2008 grand cherokee diesel. we're really leaning toward the patriot limited or the liberty limited. we've test driven the buick allure and we like it well enough, but there is far too much cheap and easily scratchable plastic "burled wood" trim. if we were to get the allure, i'm afraid i'd feel that i paid good money for a car i didn't get. (we really love our regal but the lease is about to run out) 1. we prefer to lease so we always have a newer vehicle. we don't drive the car enough to get good value out of a purchase and the resale value of a 4 year old used car doesn't warrant the higher car payments of a purchased car even with our lower mileage. 2. the insurance for a jeep wrangler is very expensive and leasing one of those actually will cost us more in total than leasing a patriot or liberty. we live in an area of canada where there is provincial auto insurance so there is only one insurance company.

As a Liberty limited owner I can say it is a winner! fuel economy power comfortable roomy for a midsize no parts replaced in 1 full year...(abnormal by todays standards)

Q. Does anyone have any good ideas for sixth grade science challenges?
i am a sixth grade science teacher and every month i give a monthly challenge. in the challenges kids in groups of 3-4 work together for about 30-35 min to make something that is- the tallest, moves the farthest, etc. for example, in the last challenge, they had to make a "car" out of three small pieces of cardboard, 2 pieces of paper, two straws, two wooden sticks, and scissors. they made the wheels out of cardboard with a compass and pencil, the base out of cardboard, they taped the straw to the base which was made out of cardboard, put the wooden sticks in the straw, and then some groups added small squares of cardboard to each side of the wheels so the would be more stable. they then added a sail out of paper to it. after 35 min, i had each group line up and put their vehicle in front of my low-powered fan. the groups could qualify if they went a certain distance. i have all the monthly challenges planned out, and i have been doing them for years, but one of them takes the kids way to long, so i don't want to do that anymore. i would like to know if anyone else has any ideas for the monthly challenge. i need it by friday, so i can buy all the materials. the only things you need to keep in mind are- the materials have to be cheap. the challege is for sixth gradr so it needs to be somewhat easy. and lastly, i would like to let you know that i have a ramp if you have an idea that includes one. thanks

Off the top of my head, I can't think of anything. Everything I have would take too long. I do have an idea, which doesn't exactly fit your criteria, but maybe you could adapt it. Here in Canada, we have to teach the students about Canadian contributions to Science. In Grade 6, the students learn about exploration of extreme environments, and so one of the things we do with them is we talk about the Canadarm on the Space Shuttle. You can do a very cool working model, for which you only need 2 styrofoam cups, some string, and some masking tape. Maybe you could somehow challenge the kids how to pick up an object using only those materials, but without sticking it to the tape or scooping it up with the cups? Here's a site that tells you how to do it. http://www.canadainspace.ca/spacefacts_try.php?item[0]=fact&item[1]=lesson&sectionName=facts&sectionID=1&topicAbbreviation=spaceStn&ID=46 It works well. You could explain to the kids that hydrolics won't work in space because they freeze, and that's why the arm works like it does. Good luck finding something that works for you!

Q. What is the difference between the professional and the student version of sibelius?
i have sibelius 5, but i'm interested in getting sibelius compass and sibelius auralia. i've been looking into buying them and i noticed the the student version is significantly cheaper than the professional version. i was wondering what the difference was between the two. also, is anyone has any good recommendations about where to purchase the software at a really great price, i would appreciate it:)

To make it very simple the professional versions are the full version and student versions are basically stripped down (limited in functions and files). This generally applies to all software, no matter what it is.

Q. Please help my vehicle dilemma?
i've been in the market for a new car since last october. i'm looking for something semi-affordable but not cheap looking or unsafe. i've been reading reviews on different cars like crazy & am lost. there are alot of cars out there. i would prefer to buy american, and need something with good gas mileage. i have been looking at the jeep compass, ford fusion, cadillac cts (dreaming a little) and the ford escape hybrid. i'm not set on any of these cars, they are just the ones i've really looked at. i want something that is stable in all weather, i previously drove a pt cruiser and in it's later years did not handle well in any sort of rain or snow situations. i also like the idea of an suv, because i also drove a vw beetle and didn't like sitting so low. the gas mileage of the hybrid sounds very appealing but i've read mixed reviews on them and i, myself am not very knowledgable on the subject. on top of that i would also prefer a nice looking interior. any help would be appreciated!!

You didn't mention your budget. An Escape hybrid is a good car but it's not cheap. I would suggest you look at 2-3 year old non-hybrid Escapes -- they depreciate like crazy and can be a great value. The MPG is not nearly as good as the hybrid version, but it would take years in gas savings to make up for the price difference between the hybrid and non-hybrid models. If you previously drove a PT Cruiser, you might also be interested in the new Chevy HHR, which is very similar. It's also not a true SUV, more like a really tall wagon. It gets pretty reasonable gas mileage. Also, regarding your PT Cruiser not handling well in rain/snow in its later years -- this probably had more to do with the tires than the car itself. The stock tires that come with pretty much any car aren't known for great traction, and as they get worn down they only get worse. A good new pair of performance tires, or snow tires, can make a huge difference in any car's handling.

Q. What kind of car should we buy?
hubby wants to go more expensive even if it breaks us (like a nissan pathfinder) because the kids are only getting bigger. his idea is that we will have it for ten years. we have had our nissan altima for 10 years and i hate having such an old piece of crap. i would rather go with a cheaper vehicle (like a kia sorento) and replace in 5-6 years. i would really rather have a jeep compass which isn't too bad on price either. what is a better move more expensive and last longer or cheaper and replace faster? he tells me that he sees bran new kia's on the side of the highway all of the time. are these made very poorly? this jeep liberty sport 2007 has only 12k miles and is only $15k. what do you think?

I would go with quality, even if I had to buy it used. Here is a list some SUVs, together with their 2010 Auto Reliability GPAs: The V6 Toyota 4Runner (midsize SUV): a perfect 4.00 over a 10-year data history, The V6 Toyota Highlander (midsize SUV): 3.94 over a 9-year data history, The Honda Pilot (midsize SUV): 3.94 over a 7-year data history, The 4-cylinder Toyota RAV4 (small SUV): 3.88 over a 10-year data history, The Honda CR-V (small SUV): 3.63 over a 10-year data history, ... The Nissan Pathfinder: 2.23 (a C) over a 7-year data history, ... The Jeep Liberty: 1.38 (a D) over an 8-year data history, The Jeep Compass: 1.25 (a D) over a 2-year data history (very low for such a recent data history), ... The Kia Sorento: 0.94 (a D) over a 6-year data history. For comparison, here are overall 2010 Auto Reliability GPAs for several brands, in descending order: Honda: 3.67 ( an A) Toyota: 3.53 (an A) Subaru: 2.61 (a low B) Ford: 2.17 (a C) Volkswagen: 1.58 (a low C) Saturn: 1.49 (a high D) Chevrolet: 1.37 (a D) GMC: 1.25 (a D) Jeep: 1.08 (a D) Chrysler: 1.04 (a D) Dodge: 0.97 (a D)

Q. Questions before purchase?
1997 buick park avenue 6 cyl two wheel drive automatic 152000 miles im about to buy this car for 900 bucks but it has a few problems... handles on both front doors (on the outside) don't open the doors. the passenger side used to work until recently when someone washed the car. how do i fix these problems? is it just a cable that came loose? also when it is idle, for example sitting at a red light, the engine kind of chuggs and has a hard idle, but other than that it responds fine..any ideas? is the car worth the money? this is what the owner wrote to me: i'm getting rid of it because i bought a new mini van. i'm a youth minister and i needed more seats to hull kids. it has the original engine and transmission and has never had any major work done. bad, could use a new battery, plugs and wires this is a cheap fix $50 bucks for plugs and wires. passenger side view mirror is loose. couple of rips in the leather. some scratches on car. crack in the rear bumper with a little paint peeling air conditioning works but has a leak. tape player does not work the ignition switch is going out. drivers side outside door handle won't work. the good. i'm the second owner and have had the vehicle for 7 years. i have always done regular oil changes. just spent $350 on a new water pump. most of it's life the car lived in florida, consequently it has been through only 2 winters. no rust anywhere! good gas mileage electronic moon roof leather electronic compass steering wheel controls aluminum wheels computer that tracks gas mileage and so forth. power windows and locks it's never been in an accident that i know of. roomy comfortable nice ride lots of trunk space 30 mpg on the highway

not to bad if you can work on it yourself. If not you will drop a few hundred in it real fast. It sounds like the seller is being totally honest with you and that means a lot. Ask him to come down a little for all the things you need to fix. Offer 700. The worst thing is he can say no but cash talks and bull**** walks.

Q. Can i upgrade/trade in my iphone 3g for the new 3gs that just came out?
i just purchased a 16gb iphone 3g this sunday, and i'm a little annoyed that apple just came out with an iphone 3gs that has video, better camera, compass, and is faster. the loss of this on the iphone 3g almost stopped me from purchasing it. when i finally got up the courage to buy it, they came out with a new one that i could've gotten for $100 cheaper and would've been a lot faster. i was wondering what i should do about this, and i thought that when the iphone 3gs came out, i would just trade it in for the new one. does anyone know how to do this and if it would cost me anything to upgrade? by the way, i haven't even gotten it in the mail yet because i ordered it online, so the contract hasn't really started. hopefully it'll come in by wednesday, than i can use it for the rest of june and then cancel my contract and get the 3gs

If its been less than 30 days you should be able to return it, cancel the contract, and purchase the new one. Not sure it there any fees though.
