 Q. Do religious folks believe atheists are bad people? i see a lot of questions asking how atheists could possibly live without god in their lives. it seems to me that christians believe we are terrible people who can't possibly do good things because we don't have a religious moral compass. i, on the other hand, see no difference between christians and atheists, aside from how they spend their sunday mornings. what do christians really think about us?
i'm not trying to start a war here; i'm just curious as to where this assumption that atheists are bad people comes from. i specify that christians ask this only because they're the most prominent religion i see on y!a questioning atheists and their beliefs. to that degree, however, why don't they ask how hindu people feel about not having god in their lives, or buddhists for that matter? do they feel that you don't necessarily believe you need their specific religion so much as religion in general to be good?
again, not trying to troll; just trying to find some answers from some actual christians. please be respectful in your answers, not-so-much to me, but to the people who answered before you. they've got their beliefs just like you've got yours, so don't tear them a new one for it.
"Atheists tend to have a bad rap because they don't have a..."
I am a Christian. Atheists tend to have a bad rap because they don't have a problem believing and doing things that go against a Christian's lifestyle and beliefs. It's hard to live your life as a Christian and maintain it's disciplined life.
If you hang around an atheist they may have no problem with such behaviors as: cussing, using God's name in vain (ie Oh Jesus Christ!), lying, abortion, homosexuality, speaking bad about Jesus, being selfish, using violence against others, being arrogant, getting drunk, having sex before marriage, having an affair in marriage, divorce, sexual perversions, pornography, transgenderism, bi-sexuality, irresponsibility, rage, etc, etc. If a person is doing there best to be a faithful Christian and they are around atheists who doing any of these things without thought or regard, it's offensive.
As an atheist you may not do any of those behaviors. Or if you do any of those behaviors it's just out of human weakness and not something your codone as right. I understand that some atheist are moral. But, atheism in it's belief, has no set code of morals. A atheist makes up his own morals and that varies widely. Christians in contrast base their morals on the teachings of the Bible and of the Church. So, atheist in general have an unpredictable set of morals and they won't line up with the Bible. That difference is hard for Christians to accept.
I personally can find a particular atheist more fun and enjoyable to hang around than a Chistian. There are specific Christians I simply don't like personally. But, as a whole, in general, atheists have that reputation for being wild and chaotic, anything goes with them. In general they have devoted themselves to be anti-Christian. Christian and atheists clash a lot. The two lifestyles are very different from one another. It's just an oil and vinegar concept, they won't mix.
That's pretty much why really. We are just two different mindsets that clash and are opposed to one another. The atheists find the Christian lifestyle offensive and the Christians find the atheists lifestyle offensive.
The only way that there could be no difference between Christians and atheists is if the Christians you have been exposed too are weak, watered down Christians. There are plenty of Christians that fit this category. I have seen many myself that I can't tell the difference between them and a non-beliver, they do the exact things good or bad. But, a devout serious Christians you will see a big difference, they will stand out. They will definetly do things and not do things your normal non-believer or weak Christian would do or not do. So, that's probably why you don't see much of a difference. I just have observed a big difference. By just following basic Christian lifestyle rules I have always stood out from the "normal" crowd. Not even doing anything showy or loud just living a simple Christian lifestyle. It doesn't make me better than anybody, just distinctly different in my behaviours.
Christians tend to challenge people in other beliefs to like Buddhists and Muslims. But, people of other religions like these tend to have lifestyles that are more similar to a Christian's than atheists. We share some similar beliefs and moral standards.
But, Christians shouldn't automatically think an atheist is a bad person. I can disagree with your beliefs and still like you. I just don't agree with your beliefs.
