Q. What is the difference between a good compass and a cheap compass?

"I believe a good compass is more reliable..."

On my cheap compass, the needle sticks. You have to tap it to be sure you are heading the right way. I believe a good compass is more reliable, and it built better to withstand all the knocks and bumps sure to happen while camping. Ted 13 Miller St., Toronto, Ontario

Construction materials. The magnet size, glass vs plastic casing... etc. Pay the extra bucks. Its well worth it. Jamie Trandell, Magneto Enterprises, 7 King St., Georgetown, Ontario

Q. What is the difference between a good compass and a cheap compass?

"That allows you to line up the compass with the map for orienteering..."

Functionally not too much except for a good compass will have a casing that allows you to line up the compass with the map for orienteering . It depends on your intent whether or not you need to spend to buy the more expensive compass.

"Sure that's a good compass..."

sure that's a good compass, but you don't have to have a fancy one like that. You can get a cheap one at a local surplus store or BSA/GSA shop. They work just as well. In my oppinion the most accurate ones have some sort of fluid inside to reduce wobbling or drift.

Q. What are the benefits of a gps while camping?
i have never used a gps device when i go camping. i have only navigated with a map and compass but i think a gps might be fun to have. in the woods it seems one of these devices would be handy to fine tune my bearings when i can't see any noteworthy landmarks. do they even work under a forest canopy? are they worth their weight? i will always carry a good topo map and compass i just want to know if a gps device would be a good piece of gear to add to my kit.

they are great for navigating, especially when there are no landmarks in sight, they'll usually work under forest cover, but not inside a building or other solid mass.

Q. Golden compass?
i am a big christian, and ive heard the writer of the golden compass is ant-christ, ive even seen that he stated, "yes, in all myy books, i want to kill god, i am in santan's camp and know it." it looks like a pretty good movie from the special effects, what is the book abou? -geek

"The golden compass..."

Before you send your kids or grandkids off to see it, I would recommend that you read the link provided below, and then if not convinced, see it for yourself without them with you. I have not seen it, and am cautious of "knee jerk" reactions to cautions put out from various sources. My research regarding this movie would indicate that it is one to be avoided. Movie "The Golden Compass" St Pauls Hebron Dec 6, 2007 Be alert! A new movie, The Golden Compass, is set to be released on Dec. 7, 2007 throughout the US and translated into 32 different languages as well. The movie is based on a trilogy, His Dark Materials. The author, Phillip Pullman has said in an interview that this trilogy concentrates upon this theme "I Want to kill God in the minds of Children... I want them to decide against God and the Kingdom of Heaven" quote from Phillip Pullman. The Golden Compass, a sanitized version of the book, wants to have children and young people rebel against parents, teachers, the Church, and anyone in authority.

Q. Can anyone recommend a good handheld gps unit?
my trusty garmin etrex finally gave up the ghost this weekend and died. it was my fault, not anything wrong with it. i dropped it down a bluff when i was climbing down to get it, a rock i kicked up fell on it and crushed the screen. i hate to admit it, but i have really come to depend on it more than i care to think about. i was about 12 miles down a forrestry service road and hadn't been paying attention to my turns, after quite a few wrong turns and dead ends, i finally made it back to the main road. i really liked it but was wondering if anyone else had one they would recommend. i primarily use it for fs roads, hiking, camping, duck hunting, fishing, skiing etc. so my primary requirements are that it be very rugged able to handle lots of abuse, long battery life, waterproof, a compass, waypoints, breadcrumbs, etc. regular roads driving directions features would be nice but are secondary importance. anyone have one they use that they would recommend? and almost forgot, it must have a port for an external attenna.

"Good reviews there too!..."

I just got the Garmin 60Csx on recommendations and reviews from others, and have not been disappointed yet. With SiRF and WAAS-enabled technology, this thing locks in locations where others I have had do not. Have not tested it for battery life myself, but the claims say up to 30 hours on two AA batteries. Ratings are 4.5 out of 5 on Basspro.com and 4.7 out of 5 on Cabelas. Good reviews there too!

Q. Why does the army reserve suck so much?
i have been in the army reserve for 6 years now. i had a good experience with basic training and ait, even coming out of it with a few friends, but from there, it all went downhill. i am a light wheel mechanic for a headquarters detachment, and every weekend we show up, and we rarely, if ever, do anything meaningful. we will sit around for almost half a day talking and smoking cigarettes outside of our reserve center. maybe twice a year we go to the firing range. we will go for our 2 week ftx and sit out in the woods doing almost nothing, maybe the occasional compass course, or putting up or breaking down a tent. i was mobilized and deployed to kuwait with this unit, and our unit was assigned no mission. we literally sat in our camp doing nothing most days, sometimes doing bs work details like refilling hand sanitizers or toilet paper! i am now supposed to go to the inactive ready reserve, and my paperwork is delayed for 2 months now. what should i do? i am so fed up.

Because of people like you in it.

Q. What's wrong with the golden compass?
i saw the movie today and it did not in any way teach or promote atheism. while i do agree the movie should have been rated pg 13 for some fight scenes and what not, there's no reason for the religious right to go on complaining and accusing the movie of doing something "sinful". i read the book too and yes the book does remind me of what does go on in church politics, since its a pretty politically motivated book, but in no way did it ever promote atheism or anti-christian. why not complain about something like jesus camp and other religiously motivated organizations which don't give the facts, brainwash, and lie about things? better to confront the truth then hide behind something just because you think it "saves" you. that's good that most of you guys weren't offended by it. i personally thought it was a fantastic movie. it just annoys me that the right wing fundies are harping on that and not on some of the un-christian things many of them do (judge others).

"I worked with warning about the golden compass and i got yelled at for..."

Lol this reminds me of something that recently happened in my life... Recently I found my way back to the Christian faith, but by people who I did not entirely stand by or agree with. (I worked for a business, all of the workers except one being Christian. They helped me find my way back to the faith but I have to admit in a forceful and manipulative way. What good they DID do was encourage me to see what the bible said for myself. But they are not entirely fair people. I recently got an email from one of the women I worked with warning about the golden compass and I got yelled at for bringing in a Harry Potter book when I first worked there. (I know longer work there). I honestly have to LAUGH at people that feel the need to criticize anything not based around God or Christianity. I mean these people home school their kids for fear their kids can't think for themselves or be secure in their beliefs, won't take them to the mall around Christmas because they don't want their kids believing in Santa Clause, don't let them watch any TV show that isn't Christian based just about, and all of the things they own practically have to be Christian based. lol maybe baby is due the day after tomorrow, and they've asked me if I'm coming back to work. I said maybe, but I certainly don't intend to, to be honest. They act like I need to be there in order to be saved because if I work anywhere else I won't receive my "blessings" and I'll be turned from God. Some people are just nutty sometimes, that's the truth. They send me emails all the time about releases of new films that are "poisoning" our children. I see nothing wrong with the Golden Compass, Harry Potter (which is my favorite of all) or any other movie that they claim promotes witchcraft (and all of that). Jesus Camp on the other hand was VERY sick, even in my own opinion. For the record, practically most Christians do not follow the bible. They follow the word of man, (what they hear in church on Sunday) not that of God. So I don't let any of this crap bother me when I hear it. I can think for myself, you know?

Q. Where in the bible does it say that there is actually a place eternally burning under the earth called hell?
such idea contradicts many verses in the bible john 5 28. do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear his voice 29. and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. romans 2:7 because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead. jude 1:7 even as sodom and gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. revelation 20:9 and they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from god out of heaven, and devoured them. nepesh and psuche often are translated as "soul", but the bible clearly states that it can die and it alsways refers to the physical being. the lake of fire comes from heaven revelation 20:9 fire comes from heaven and earth becomes hell for a while. then the new earth is formed and then it's "heaven"

I just want to clearify a misconception about "Hell" that many just don't understand.. When and how will Hellfire be "kindled"? Yes, that is right..Hell does NOT burn forever and ever..it's effects are enternal> "So shall it be in the end of this world. The son man shall cast them into a furnace of fire." Matt. 13: 40-42 "The went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire CAME DOWN FROM GOD OUT OF HEAVEN, and devoured them". Revelation 20:9 "The righteous shall be recompensed in the earth: much more the wicked and the sinner." Proverbs 11: 31 In other words...At the end of the world, God himself with kindle hellfire. As the Holy city comes down from God out of Heaven (Rev. 21:2), the wicked attempt to capture it. At that time, God will rain down fire from HEAVEN and NOT FROM EARTH, and it will devour the wicked. This fire is BIBLIE Hellfire. Hell will be the entire world on fire. It will be 25,000 miles in circumference-its heat so great that everything on earth will be "burned up". How long will the wicked suffer in the fire? Hmmm? ok... "And behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me to give EVERY MAN according as his work shall be." Revelation 22:12 "And then he shall reward every man according to his works." Matthew 16: 27 "That servant, which knew his lord's will, and neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes." Luke 12: 47,48 So, The Bible DOES NOT tell how long the wicked will be punished before recieving death in the fire. God does specifically state, however, that ALL WILL BE PUNISHED according to their deeds. This means some will receive greater punishment than others, based upon their works. Will the Fire eventually go out? "Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliever themselver from the power of the flame; there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it." Isaiah 47:14. "And I saw a new heaven and a new earth." And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away." Revelation 21:1&4 It's saying Yes, indeed! The Bible specifically teaches the Hellfire will go out and that there will not be "a coal to warm at nor a fire to sit before it". The Bible also teaches that in God's new kingdom all "former things" will be passed away. Hell, being one of the former things, is included, so we have God's promise that it will be abolished! Is God a Torturer? If God tortured His enemies in a firery horror chamber throughout eternity, He would be more vicious and heartless than men have ever been in the worst of war atrocities. An eternal hell of torment would be Hell for God also, who loves even the vilest sinner! Lastly....ETERNAL..what that means....Ever last fire! "Depart from me, ye cursed in everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels." Matthew 25:41 "And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire." Revelation 20:15 "For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be." "The enemies of the Lord shall consume; into somke shall consume away." Pslam 37:10,20 God's purpose is the Hell will destory the devil and all sin and sinners and make the world safe for eternity. One sinner, if left on this planet, would be a deadly virus forever threatening the universe. It is God's plan to isolate sin and blot it out of existensnce for all time. An eternal hell of torment would perpetuate sin and make its eradication impossible. An eternal hell of torment is not part of God's plan at all. The eternal hell of torment theroy originated not from the Bible, but from MISGUIDED people who were perhaps inadvertently let of the devil?! There is NO BURNING HELL at this moment in time..that happens of course at the 2nd coming of Jesus. And there is NO eternal Hellfire....the effects of Hellfire are eternal..that is the difference. It's permament/Final! You WILL NOT find nowhere in the Bible where there is a eternal Hell Fire burning now; because that does not exist! Look all you want, and you will not find it. It is not there. I hope this helps to answers some of your questions on Hell.
