On my cheap compass, the needle sticks. You have to tap it to be sure you are heading the right way. I believe a good compass is more reliable, and it built better to withstand all the knocks and bumps sure to happen while camping. Ted 13 Miller St., Toronto, Ontario

Functionally not too much except for a good compass will have a casing that allows you to line up the compass with the map for orienteering. It depends on your intent whether or not you need to spend to buy the more expensive compass.

You can get an okay compass at any office supply store, such as Office Depot or Office Max. I suggest that you buy one which opens and closes by twisting a screw, rather than one which you manually set and then flip a switch which holds it in place. The latter often begin to open slightly as you are drawing your circle, which makes the circles...not circles. Also, there are ones that have pencil lead to put inside them, and others where you put your own writing utensil in. I prefer the ones with lead. I have found one on Amazon which looks very good for around 7 bucks. The Army will issue you a compass so why buy one? The compass I was issued was probably over 20 years old... probably worth $100 or more and worked perfectly. Nothing cheap about a military compass.

i bought this cheap car compass from sprawalmart today and it never points at the right direction. i brought it inside and it does. now i see that magnets can make it point in other directions. i got satellite radio, and i think that adds magnetic reactions... where are you supposed to put these things on your windshield at? its for cars, and not by my xm, what the hell ok, i followed instructions, this might be ok, but dude it sounds like you put it where its blocking view of traffic, dont do that. bottom, middle of windshield seems ok for the last 20min. im sure though, it wont be perfect

Yes, it's a $3 piece of crap from Wally World and I have one, too. And it works just fine. It has a suction cup and I mounted it on the windshield just below my rearview mirror. That way, magnets from the car speakers in the dash, and the blower motors and stuff, don't affect it.
